      1. 2. Canal History and Technology Proceedings, Volume XIX

In 1878, the trials of the Molly Maguires, a secret society of Irish immigrants, ended a decade of violence between the mine bosses and their Irish workers.  The trials were infamous for the fact that private attorneys and anthracite company executives served as special prosecutors.  Lance Metz explores the theory that Edward W. Clark, president of the Lehigh Coal and Navigation Company, was actually a special prosecutor in the trial.  The evidence against Clark sheds light on one of the most controversial episodes in Pennsylvania's history.
